Faclilities

ARL QUANTO DESK SPECTROMETER
IRC Laboratory is equipped with an “ARL QUANTO DESK SPECTROMETER” which is an instrument to give detailed analysis of material within few seconds with accuracy up to second place of decimal. The ARL SMS-2000 OES is coupled to an optical emission spectrometer supported by state of the art software. The analytical results can be seen instantly on screen or a hard copy of the same can be obtained.

portable x-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzer
A hand held, high performance portable x-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzer, popularly known as “Positive material Identification” (PMI), is frequently used by the laboratory engineers and technicians to segregate the different grades of alloys or metal components, likely to be mixed up during transit or storage. The instrument has been also used to understand if lower grade material has been used for more strenuous service condition.

remote video imaging system
An advance and sophisticated remote video imaging system is used for the internal inspection of turbine shaft bores, post overhaul inspection of turbine drains, boiler headers, automobiles & aircraft engines. With the help of facility, presence of foreign body, blockages or cracks in the internal surface /ligament can be displayed live on an attached video screen and footage can be recorded and down loaded on PC. Telescopic probes up to 10 meters length are available for such inspections.

Digital Ultrasonic Flaw Detectors

Number of Digital Ultrasonic Flaw Detectors are regularly used at different locations to detect flaws or discontinuity in boiler & turbine components, castings, forging and weld joints. The instruments have facility for data memory & auto DAC plotting, using minimum 2 & maximum 10 points.

Eddy Current Testing equipments

IRC has Eddy Current Testing equipments to probe discontinuity in turbine blades, condenser tubes and other heat exchangers. Customized probes are made to suite the site specific requirements. The investigation results are followed by analysis of reasons of damage and suggest remedial measures.

Vickers Hardness Tester equipments

IRC has Vickers Hardness Tester equipments from 1kgf to 50 kgf load selector M/c, used to measure hardness of products of smaller thickness & hardness survey of weld test coupons where number of indentations are required to be taken in smaller zones covering weld & heat affected including weld decay zone. The machine has its unique utility in precisely determining the effective case depth of case hardenened components.

sample preparations

IRC has an elaborate arrangement of sample preparations polishing, molding, etching & optical microscope under the supervision of highly qualified and experienced metallurgists. It also owns facilities of portable microscopes and team of experts to raise microstructure from in- service components to evaluate the status of material degradation if any, and their remnant life.

Magnetic Particle Inspection

For the purpose of examining a subsurface defect or discontinuity, Magnetic Particle Inspection is used. IRC have extensively used the MPI kits for inspection of long and circumferential weld seams of boiler drum, headers and technique has been helpful to detect flaws on the turbine blades by coil type MPI method.

600KN capacity U.T. machine

The mechanical test laboratory is equipped with a 600KN capacity U.T. machine to facilitate the evaluation of tensile strength, Yield strength and allied data's such as elongation & reduction in area percentage at room temperature as well as at elevated temperatures up to 800oC. The machine is also used for determining the compressive strength of various metallic / Non-metallic products including RCC & refractory.

300 Joules impact test machine

300 Joules impact test machine conforming to ASTM standard is available to facilitate charpy/izod test of material. IRC Laboratory is also equipped to conduct the impact Test conforming to BS standard, with arrangements for testing at sub-zero temperature, up to minus 200oC

Creep rupture testing machines

IRC is uniquely placed to have been using Creep rupture testing machines confirming to ASTM 139, within its own laboratory. The machines facilitate to assess the remanent life of the components, operating under high stress service conditions by following ISO-Thermal and ISO-Stress test procedures.

Oxide Scale Thickness by portable instrument

In-situ measurement of Oxide Scale Thickness by portable instrument is an important input to compute remanent life of components by use of a empirical relationship & relevant software.
